Preconceptional Sex Selection Techniques (CPB 0323, reviewed 2026-05-20)

Aetna's policy on preconceptional sex selection techniques (CPB 0323, effective 2026-05-20) clarifies that sperm sorting for sex selection is covered only when medically necessary to prevent conception of a male child in women who are carriers of serious X-linked genetic disorders (e.g., Lesch-Nyhan disease). Sex selection for personal, social, or cultural reasons—including family balancing—is not covered. Assisted reproductive techniques (IVF, ICSI) used solely for sex selection without genetic disease prevention are excluded from coverage.
