Jun 20, 2026
Summary
The CDC has lowered the blood lead reference value for children from 5 µg/dL to 3.5 µg/dL, which may result in more children being identified as having elevated lead levels. Providers should refer eligible pediatric patients to UPMC Pediatric Care Management for case management and environmental investigation support.
Action Required
Immediately: Clinical staff should begin using the new 3.5 µg/dL reference value when evaluating pediatric blood lead test results. Contact UPMC Pediatric Care Management at pedscasemanagement@upmc.edu or 1-866-778-6073 (select 'pediatrics') for children with elevated levels. Review the UPMC Health Plan Lead Screening Provider Tip Sheet for updated guidance.
