Summary
Effective July 1, 2026, Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico will implement enhanced claims editing for evaluation and management services that may automatically downcode E&M claims to lower service levels if documentation doesn't support the billed level. Providers can appeal by submitting medical records if they disagree with the downcoded reimbursement level.
Action Required
Before July 1, 2026: Billing team and providers must review and strengthen E&M documentation practices to ensure all office, inpatient, and outpatient E&M visits meet AMA guidelines for the level billed. Update EMR templates to include required elements for medical decision-making. Train providers on documentation requirements as claims may be automatically downcoded to lower reimbursement levels if documentation is insufficient.
