Summary
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma is implementing new prior authorization requirements for some commercial and government program members. Medicare Advantage members will have miscellaneous codes added for prior auth review by BCBSOK effective April 1, 2026, while commercial members will have an Advanced Imaging code added for review by Carelon effective July 1, 2026.

By March 31, 2026: Billing team must check the updated prior authorization lists on BCBS Oklahoma's website to identify specific miscellaneous codes requiring prior auth for Medicare Advantage members. By June 30, 2026: Review updated lists for Advanced Imaging codes requiring prior auth for commercial members through Carelon. Update billing system workflows to verify eligibility and benefits through Availity Essentials before rendering services. Train staff that services performed without required prior authorization may be denied and providers cannot bill patients directly.
