Summary
Indiana Medicaid now requires all claims for school-based services and First Steps program services to include the National Provider Identifier (NPI) of the ordering or referring provider. Claims missing the ordering provider's NPI will be denied, with specific denial procedures to be implemented later this summer.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must update claim submission procedures to include the ordering provider's NPI for all Indiana Medicaid claims for nursing services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and speech-language pathology services provided through schools or First Steps program. Verify that school corporation NPIs are NOT used as ordering provider NPIs. Update billing system edits to require ordering provider NPI field completion. Claims without ordering provider NPIs will be denied starting later this summer.
