Summary

Effective July 1, 2021, Indiana Medicaid expanded which behavioral health professionals can certify mental health diagnoses without physician confirmation. Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC), and Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselors (LCAC) can now independently certify mental health diagnoses and enroll as billing/rendering providers.

Billing team should verify that LCSWs, LMFTs, LMHCs, and LCACs are enrolled as eligible billing/rendering providers in the system with provider type 11 and respective specialty codes (618, 619, 620, 621). Update provider credentialing processes to recognize these professionals can independently certify mental health diagnoses without physician supervision for Indiana Medicaid claims.
